I came across Organoponico in the recent BBC documentary Tropic Of Cancer . It is a system of urban organic farming that now supply Havana with more than 90% of their vegetable from 200 large organoponicos.
The system developed in the 1990s as a response to the collapse of the Soviet Union. During the cold war Cuba imported huge amounts of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides but after the collapse of the Soviet Union cheap fuel and chemicals were no longer available. This resulted in a scarcities of food which forced Cuban urbanites to grow their own food on untilised land.
