Slugs Decimate Seedlings

Yesterday I left out some bean plants to harden off under the cloche before planting. When I came home from work today over half of the bean seedlings were decimated by slugs. Most of my gardening is done organically but when it comes to dealing with slugs I do not hesitate in using slug pellets.

I would be interest to know if anyone can suggest an effective alternative to pellets ?
