Wasteful Packaging

I ordered 3 webcams and some cables for the office and when they arrived this week I was surprised with the size of the delivery box from the online store. On opening I found 3 oversized package boxes for the webcams. The webcam could easily have fitted into packaging quarter of the size. The user booklet and CD that came with the package are also going in the bin and I had no need to use or read them.

The cable packaging was a different story. They were rolled up, cable tied and packed into a plastic bag with a white label giving the description. Minimum packaging as you would expect.

I buy most of my computer bits and pieces online and I don't need fancy bulky packaging and it does not influence my purchasing decision. So can manufacturers focus on smaller, 'yellow label' packaging especially for goods sold online.

  1. I'd go for a 'yellow pack' option myself if it was available. I think most people would too, especially if the manufacturers pushed the 'green' angle and dropped the price a small margin - better a bird in the hand and all that :)
