I donned my hat and jacket and spent a few hours outside in the garden cleaning out the compost bins. Both were full to the brim and had not been emptied since this time last year. There was enough compost in the bottom 2/3 of each bin to cover 3 raised beds with a thick layer of compost. The top 1/3 went back into the empty bins to let it decompose until I empty them again in a year's time.
A few items that did not degrade in the bin were tea bags, egg shells, and surprisingly the biodegradable bags we use to line the kitchen bins. Even after 12 months a lot of the bag still remained and needed to be picked out of the compost spread on the raised beds. I suppose I will just need to get into the habit of emptying the bag's content into the compost bin and throw the bag into the general waste.
