2017 Climbing at a Glance

Another year, another climbing logbook full, and another graph. Early in the year I adding an extra indoor climbing session and it appeared to make a difference. I was consistently getting on more 7a routes and getting more of them clean. I also joined the Irish Mountaineering Club which helped introduce me to a whole bunch of new outdoor climbing partners. I would recommend anyone to check out the club if interested in getting involved in outdoor traditional climbing in Ireland as they run a good new member introduction program and organise regular crag trips. There is also a good cross section of climbing abilities, ages, and there is an overall good atmosphere at meetups.

The outdoor traditional season started well with some good trips to Gap of Dunloe, Fairhead, and Glendalough. A trip to Lower Cove in the Mournes in July put a quick end to my 2017 trad season when I fractured my heel in a fall on Overdue (E2 5c). I only started back climbing in October and it has been taking a little time to get back up to the same level I was at prior to the accident. So 2018 will be interesting especially when outdoor season starts in the spring. I do intend to get back on Overdue and it will be really interesting to see where my head is for this route.
