I recently got a request from a friend to make some footrests for a boat he is upgrading. He races sail boats and was looking for a pair of footrests to attach to the deck so the sailor can braces against the footrest when the boat leans over.
After a brief discussion of the requirements, understanding how they will be used, and how they will be attached to the deck, I came up with the following design. The rests are made from three pieces of 800mm lengths of 20mm thick hardwood stacked to form a triangular cross-section. Stainless steel bolts through the bottom two pieces are used to attach the footrests to the deck and a top piece covers the fixing bolts.
A nice little project to get back into the workshop and blow the dust off my tools. My friend is happy with the result and a case of beer is on it way to me.
