2019 Climbing at a Glance

To paraphrase the legendary management consultant Peter Drucker, 'What gets measured gets improved'. This is the fourth year where I have consistently tracked all routes I climbed in the year both indoor and outdoor, sport and trad. It is a simple exercise of having a €1 notebook and pen in my gear bag and noting down all routes in a session. The hardest part is transferring the data from the notebook to a Google spreadsheet every few months.

I'm happy with my indoor training last year. I had a focus on 7b routes and definitely got on a lot of them but really suffered with finger strength and power endurance on the steeper routes. This year's focus will be on finger strength training and adding in a regular bouldering session.

Some of the highlights from 2019 were...

Visit to Leonidio, Greece in April. About a 3.5 hour drive from Athens and a mecca for climbing. Leonidio town is at the centre of 15 crags with 700+ route of all grades. Most crags are within a 15 min drive of the town and have a 15~40 min walk in. The town has a population of over 3,000 so there are plenty of shops, bars, restaurant to choose from. I highly recommend a visit.

Crib Pad Crack E1 5b, Fairhead

The annual Fairhead climbing meet over the June Bank Holiday weekend was well attended by a few hundred climbers and the IMC Fairhead meet in July had about 30 club members visit the crag.

Sports climbing on Inis Mor off the west coast was a revelation. Steep, bomber rock, and technical climbing. I was recently talking to some of the guys bolting the routes and they are eager for the spring to arrive and get back to the island to bolt more routes. Definitely want to visit again this year.
