Wildflower Lawn

The spring equinox has arrived, the danger of frost is passing, and it is time to get some work done outside in the garden. I was hoping to convert a portion of my garden to wildflowers last year but Covid hit and my focus was elsewhere last spring.

This year I bought two wildflower seed mixes; a native Irish wildflower biodiversity mix, and a vintage blue mix. I haven't decide yet weather I'll mix both together or sow in a pattern with pockets of each mix.

Ground preparation seems to be key to successful growing of a wildflower lawn. Avoid sowing directly into an existing lawn. I removed the turf from half of my lawn and dug over the top 50mm of top soil, removing any stones and deep roots. The plan for next weekend is to sow the seed in the newly dug area and along the side of my front drive.
