Gutter Propagation Update

Back in May I planted some chive and bean seeds in a length of gutter piping as a bit of an experiment. The chives and beans have grown quite well with the chives ready for harvesting. Flowers have started to appear on my the beans so pods should start forming soon. My original plan was to only grow the beans until they were large enough to transplant but due to lack of space (or laziness) I have left the beans in the gutter pipe. These bush beans are a compact variety so don't take up much space.
On the plus side propagation in a gutter pipe provides a very compact space to grow some vegetables. The piping is easy of move around even with plants. You can easily imagine having a vertical garden with several rows of gutter mounted one above the other on a frame on your apartment balcony.
The main disadvantage I have experienced is that the compost dries out very quickly and required more regular watering than the plants in the raised beds. In the future I would recommend using a compost with a wetting agent.
