Harvesting Onion & Garlic

I lifted all my onions and garlic today, and have got a pretty nice harvest for the house. I have cleaned off most of the dirt, trimmed the tops and placed them in some plastic baskets that should allow the air to circulate around them. I left them in the garage to dry out but if it ever stops raining for long enough I will leave them out to dry in the sun.
I now have a free raised bed and need to decide what I should plant next. Tomorrow I get out the garden books and seeds packets to see what can be planted in August.

  1. Hmmm Cool, your garden is great! I just got a small haul of onions from one plot too, I've got the same problem, bloody rain hanging around and won't bugger off. I'm thinking of just putting them under the house so at least the wind can help dry them out..

With your garlic, how long did you grow that for? Mine has been in since April I think (I'd have to check).. I know it takes ages but if you pull them early are the bulbs just smaller with less cloves? First time I've grown it ; )

  2. Hi Rolley. I planted my garlic back in March. From what I have read if you want an early crop you should plant your cloves in Oct/Nov and leave then in the ground over winter. I am very happy with the cultvated bulbs I grow this year and will be planting more this Autumn.
