Today I harvested my first harvest of tomatoes. I have about a dozen plants in two crops. My first crop is just starting to ripen with juicy red tomatoes at the top of the trusses with ripening tomatoes gradually working their way down the trusses. My second tomato crop is about 3 or 4 weeks behind this crop so I am not sure if the weather will hold out until I get a crop.
With 3 or 4 trusses on each plant it looks like I will be eating tomatoes with some nice bruschetta rubbed with my garlic for the next few weeks.
To encourage the plants to concentrate all of their energy into fruit production I have cut of all the leaves up to the first truss and thinned out some of the remaining leaves. I also pinch out any remaining flowers at the end of trusses with a large number of set tomatoes. These will never reach maturity so there is no point in the plants waste energy.
