Weekend Jobs 2011-06-19

I am rapidly running out of space in my raised beds. After planting out most of my squashes and chinese cabbage I am left with 2 half beds of space for further planting. I have started to look for opportunities to intercrop new plants with my existing plants.

Some of the jobs tackled this weekend included.
  • Young cabbage plants inter-cropped with sweetcorn. Since the sweetcorn is tall and planted in rows about 40cm, and the cabbage is compact in size there should be enough space for the cabbage to grow.
  • Continued to sow radishes. Since they fast growing and don't take up much space I have also intercropped these with my sweetcorn.
  • Planted on half of my pumpkins and squashes into raised beds. They require plenty of space as they grow so fill up half a bed.
  • Planted on the chinese cabbage that I sowed in trays about 3 weeks ago. These plants require a surprising amount of space to grow so I have left about 50cm between each young plant.
  • Sowed some lettuce, pak choi, and courgettes in trays in my outside propagator.
  • More flowers are appearing on my chilli plants and the fruit has started to form. Looking forward to eating these in the coming weeks.
  • Regular hoeing between plants to keep weeds under control.
  • Finished staking my tomatoes and pinched out side shoots.
