There is not much happening in the garden at the moment but October/November is an ideal time to plant your over-winter garlic and onion sets. Last year was the first year that I over-wintered these crops and resulted in an earlier summer harvest.
I visited the garden centre today and picked up a pack of garlic bulbs, variety 'Germidour', for €5. The pack of 3 bulbs should give me 30 ~ 40 garlic plants. I also bought a pack of white onion sets, variety 'Shenshuy', and red onion sets, variety 'Electric'. Each pack contains 100 sets and only cost €3.
Tomorrow I plan to dig over a raised bed and plant each bulb set just below the surface spaced them about 15cm apart. Remember not to plant garlic and onions where members of the onion family have grown in the last 2 years.
