I eventually got around to clearing out a section of a raised bed today to plant this year's over winter onions. I picked up a pack of 'Radar' onion containing about 50 sets for €3. Plant the sets in rows about 2~3cm deep and 10~12cm apart. Make sure the root side is pointing down and the pointed growing bud up (it can be a little difficult to tell which end is which for some sets). I decide not to plant any red onions this year as they don't keep as well and we also eat less of them. I will probably top up my onions by planting another pack of sets early next spring.
I expect to see early signs of growth in December and be able to harvest some young growth in spring. The mature onions will be ready to lift early next summer.
