About 30 sweetcorn plants transplanted into a raised bed this afternoon. They have been hardening off in my outdoor propagator for the last 2 weeks to acclimatised before final planting.
Sweetcorn should be planted in square blocks rather than in long rows. Unlike most plants sweetcorn are not pollinated by insects but rely on the wind to blow pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers. This works best when the plants are arranged in a block pattern. Plant the young plants about 40cm apart in each direction.
Last year was the first time I grew sweetcorn and they were a great success. Looking forward to this year's harvest in August or September.
