Strawberries

This evening I harvested the first of this seasons' strawberries. With all the recent rain followed by some decent temperatures there has been a huge amount of growth in the garden. A few weeks back I spread some dried shredded hedge clippings around the strawberries in order to keep the fruit off the ground and stop slugs eating the fruit before I do. I also covered the raised bed with netting to prevent the birds from eating the ripening fruit. This approach seems to be working so far.
We also have been eating carrots, spring onions and lettuce from the garden. Over the years I never had great success growing carrots and this year is no exception. This year's crop are not the best looking carrots and the taste is nothing special.
